It was a typical friday morning in the summer. Slow, cozy, and boring. I was dozing in and out of consciousness, listening to the birds cheep outside of my window. I finally fell asleep, with little to nothing on my mind but the fact that I had nothing to do today. I was awoken by my mother, “Oh Emma” she said softly. “Emma you better wake up.” She said this a little more forcefully, but I could mostly only hear excitement in her voice. I become irritated. “Oh dear lord Mother, It is only 8am on a summer morning.” I thought to myself. I rolled over, not yet willing to accept my consciousness at such an ungodly hour. She met my tired and annoyed gaze with one of excitement and joy. She was holding up her phone. “Look Emma, over night something very important happened.” My eyes took a moment of two to focus on the email, but as soon as I saw the address it came from I knew what had happened.
I was still pretty tired, so it took a moment to register in my mind. I rolled over and pressed my face into my pillow to cover my happy squeals. I hugged my mother, she said she had to take the dog on a walk, and she left. My father called me later asking if I had seen the email yet, I told him yes and began to gush about all the research I had already done.
I think he was more astounded by the fact that I was awake this early in the summer.
But how could I sleep? How could I sleep ever again?
If you haven’t yet figured out the news shame on you, your powers of deduction are very poor.
It’s a family of 5... A father, a Mother, and 3 kids. 2 sons, one my age the other younger, and a daughter who is younger than me. I am very excited to see what it is like to have brothers, and to have younger siblings. I have already talked to my family a little bit, and they already seem extremely welcoming and affectionate.
They live in a little town called Turrialba. It sits at the base of a volcano, at it has a population of about 35,000. Smaller than F-town, and that’s exactly what I wanted. Its industries are textiles, agriculture, and tourism. Many people come to hike or raft, its a base camp for people climbing the volcano. It’s 53 Km out of San Jose, the big city. Not too close, not too far. It is known for its beautiful jungle landscape.
They don’t have a street address, they just call their house the Casa de Banco Nacional, Turrialba Centro. In Costa Rica it is very common for houses not to have street addresses, and to just be associated to nearby landmarks. In this case it would be the national bank.
I have only received information on their names, ages, and where they live. I don't have any photos yet, nor do I have their home address (it would appear). I have a choice between my own room, or a room with my sister. I am not sure which to choose yet... Although these things are important to me, I am just so stunned and happy to have a family I am on a cloud right now. I can't wait to meet them.
I am not sure when AFS will send me an email with more information. For now, I am trying to email them in spanish. It is not going too well.
I will be sure to keep you posted on any new updates on my experience.
Anyway, I just wanted to share this exciting news with you on this very exciting
day, June 6th, 2014. A day that will change my life forever.
